The CDAO has publicly launched the Generative AI version of the RAI Toolkit, termed the “GenAI Toolkit,” in support of the Department’s implementation of its Guidelines & Guardrails for Governance of Generative AI Memorandum.
The Guidelines & Guardrails provided guidance to DoD Components for proactively addressing risks associated with GenAI capabilities. The GenAI Toolkit operationalizes the memo through specific assessments and tools tailored to enable GenAI project leaders to ensure responsible and safe design, development, deployment, and use of this new technology.
CDAO Radha Plumb affirmed, “Accelerating the use of AI across the Department of Defense requires that our leaders and warfighters trust AI-enabled tools. Translating our rules into a tool kit provides a way to ensure that these new capabilities can be rapidly deployed.”
The GenAI Toolkit shares its structure and much of its content with the RAI Toolkit, released in November 2023. Built upon other proven RAI frameworks, assessments, and toolkits, the GenAI Toolkit progresses sequentially through each stage of the product development lifecycle, including new or modified questions and 33 additional tools to address concerns and risks specific to GenAI. For example, it offers a unique prescreening guide that helps users determine whether GenAI is the right technology to meet their particular operational needs. The GenAI Toolkit is intended to be a technical resource to support a federated approach to GenAI development and governance.
The GenAI Toolkit will be updated regularly, and its contents will be integrated into the current RAI Toolkit interactive webapp in the near future. Readers may access the GenAI Toolkit here: GenAI Toolkit
