Overview
AI has incredible promise across the DoD's full gamut of activities, from inside the Pentagon, to headquarters elements, to the battlefield itself, and more. Emerging Generative AI (GenAI) capabilities—such as Large Language Models (LLMs)—offer significant potential to transform DoD missions and operations.
Accelerating DoD Adoption of AI
To integrate rapidly evolving AI solutions at the speed of relevancy, CDAO has stood up an AI Rapid Capabilities Cell (AI RCC) in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). The AI RCC is leading efforts to accelerate and scale the deployment of cutting-edge AI-enabled tools, to include frontier models, across the DoD.
The AI RCC is prioritizing executing pilots in the primary warfighting and enterprise management use case areas identified by Task Force Lima, which was sunsetted in December 2024. Those areas are:
Warfighting:
Command and Control (C2) and decision support, operational planning, logistics, weapons development and testing, uncrewed and autonomous systems, intelligence activities, information operations, and cyber operations.
Enterprise management:
Financial systems, human resources, enterprise logistics and supply chain, health care information management, legal analysis and compliance, procurement processes, and software development and cybersecurity.
In addition to rapid experimentation through pilots in priority use cases, AI RCC is also making investments in foundational AI infrastructure and tools to enable pilot development, experimentation, and testing.
Companies with innovative AI solutions can submit pitch videos on CDAO’s Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace, or solution briefs to DIU’s open Commercial Solutions Openings (CSOs). Stay tuned for further details as DoD plans to release further AI-centric challenges in the future.
