Expanding Access to the Data, Analytics & AI Workforce for DoD
Overview
To accelerate digital transformation across the DoD and ensure U.S. competitive advantage, our workforce needs the right skillsets. The CDAO is focused on securing and strengthening the DoD’s defense digital workforce to build the Department’s data and AI capabilities.
Misson Priorities
Identify and Expand Access to Talent through Functional Community Management
Identifying opportunities and expanding access for our workforce to develop and thrive is key for optimal manning of advanced systems and tools for critical missions. “Coding” work roles (e.g., occupations that utilize DA&AI as part of their duties) will allow for a common understanding of digital capability in the DoD and ensure skills and capabilities are aligned with industry partners.
To that end, CDAO aims to expand DA&AI work roles and to identify relevant personnel to aid in this mission through coding 50% of the Total Force in both personnel and manpower systems in calendar year 2025. This will provide workforce leaders with a universal set of standards upon which to identify critical roles across the Department.
Upskilling and Reskilling for the Total Force
The CDAO aims to accelerate the development and access of critical learning pathways in DA&AI for prospective talent through targeted training for certain skillsets.
CDAO will prioritize delivery of leading DA&AI-enabled organization course programs that serve to equip DoD executives with a common framework to approach DA&AI strategically and responsibly, fundamentals of good data management, and ways to thoughtfully adopt AI-enabled capabilities.
Strategic Recruiting & Future Force Development
Building a digitally literate and capable workforce requires investing in future digital leaders. The CDAO works with academic and industry partners to enable the DoD to identify and curate prospective DA&AI talent at a scale to meet the Department’s demands. Through a combination of early engagement at the middle and high school levels and pre-career college focused initiatives, the CDAO broadens awareness of opportunities in STEM, data, and AI in defense, and highlights opportunities to support national security and military effectiveness.
