The CDAO is at the Helm of the DoD’s New Generative AI Task Force

By CDAO Public Affairs

The Department of Defense (DoD) has established Task Force Lima, a Department-wide initiative to examine generative artificial intelligence (AI) and develop recommendations on how to use these powerful tools in a responsible manner. At the direction of Deputy Secretary of Defense Dr. Kathleen Hicks, Task Force Lima will develop, evaluate, recommend, and monitor the implementation of generative AI capabilities across the DoD to ensure the department is ready to implement, adopt, and appropriately protect against generative AI technologies, such as large language models (LLMs). With AI at the forefront of tech advancements and public discourse, the DoD will enhance its operations in areas such as warfighting, business affairs, health, readiness, and policy with the implementation of generative AI. Task Force Lima will assess, synchronize, and employ generative AI capabilities across the Department, ensuring the military remains at the forefront of cutting-edge technological advancements while safeguarding national security. U.S. Navy Capt. M. Xavier Lugo, Task Force Lima mission commander and member of the CDAO’s Algorithmic Warfare Directorate, is leading a team comprised of OSD Principal Staff Assistants, Joint Staff, the Services, other DoD agencies, and the Intelligence Community. Industry and academia will also participate, serving as subject matter experts. “The Services and Combatant Commands are actively seeking to leverage the benefits and manage the risks of generative AI capabilities and LLMs across multiple mission areas, including intelligence, operational planning, programmatic and business processes,” says Capt. Lugo. “By prioritizing efforts, reducing duplication, and providing enabling AI scaffolding, Task Force Lima will be able to shape the effective and responsible implementation of LLMs throughout the DoD.” Task Force Lima is actively accepting and encouraging use case submissions from across the DoD and the federal government. Authorized personnel can create an account to access the task force portal for more information and submit prospective use cases here. (https://www.trmc.osd.mil/wiki/x/EZEKDg)
