Dr. Douglas “Doug” Matty is the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer of the Department of Defense. In this role, he leads the acceleration of DoD’s adoption of data, analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) to generate decision advantage.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Douglas Matty served as the Director of Research for AI and Autonomy at University of Alabama in Huntsville. Dr. Matty served as an Executive Engineer (Adjunct) for the RAND Corporation. Previously, Dr. Matty served in the Department of the Army’s Senior Executive Service as the Director, Army Artificial Intelligence Capabilities. He is the founder of the US Army Artificial Intelligence Integration Center responsible for development, coordination, and synchronization of Artificial Intelligence Capabilities for the Army and provided critical support to the Department of Defense Joint AI Center. This included all aspects of capabilities, especially material and workforce development.
This followed a distinguished 30-year career as an active-duty officer in Air Defense Artillery and Operations Research and Systems Analysis Functional Area. Dr. Matty served in command and staff assignments from battery-level to Headquarters USF-I. He also was awarded numerous individual and unit awards for national defense during the Cold War, Desert Storm/desert Shield, and Operation New Dawn as well as HQDA Staff Badge and Joint Staff Badge.
Dr. Matty’s academic degrees include BS in Computer Engineering from the United Stated Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY. He has a MS in Applied Mathematics (minor in Cryptography) and MA in National Securities Studies from the US Army War College. He also has a Doctorate Degree in Engineering Systems from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) focused on Enterprise Engineering using advanced analytical and empirical methods.
Dr. Matty has broad experience on boards of trustees for non-profit entities focused on economic development, advanced research and development, and veteran support, including as a co-founder for Project Healing Waters Inc.
