Mr. Joseph (Joe) Larson Deputy Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer for Algorithmic Warfare
Mr. Joseph P. Larson III is a member of the Senior Executive Service and serves as the Deputy Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer (Algorithmic Warfare) within the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Prior to assuming these responsibilities in June 2022, Joseph was a Highly Qualified Expert at the National Geospatial Agency and was detailed as the Chief, Algorithmic Warfare Cross-Functional Team (Project Maven), ISR Operations Directorate, Warfighter Support, Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence (OUSD (I&S)).
Prior to government civilian service, Joseph held several private sector positions related to data, policy, technology, and national security. He was a Senior Director for Joint All Domain Command and Control; Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance; and Battle Management at Anduril Industries; Head of Business Operations at Tulco Labs, a private equity firm focused on transforming highly regulated industries through machine learning that was acquired in 2020; Head of AI Policy and Strategy at Palantir Technologies; and a law firm associate, antitrust and bankruptcy law, at Sidley Austin, LLP.
In addition to his private sector experience, Joseph has served for twenty-one years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve as an intelligence officer and information operations planner, including multiple deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom contingency operations. His last active duty assignment was Deputy Chief, Project Maven, as the OUSD (I&S) from 2016-2019. He is a military graduate of the Marine Corps Command and Staff (Distance Education Program) and is a current student at the Army War College (Distance Education Program).
Joseph holds degrees from Stanford Law School (J.D., 2009) and the University of San Diego (B.A., 2001).
