ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
When Secretary of Defense Esper was asked by Congress what the number one priority for DoD technology modernization ought to be, he responded, "For me it's artificial intelligence. I think artificial intelligence will likely change the character of warfare, and I believe whoever masters it first will dominate on the battlefield for many, many, many years. It's a fundamental game changer. We have to get there first."
The potential of AI is compared to harnessing the power of electricity. The Department of Defense is focused on delivering AI-enabled solutions that benefit our troops operating across the globe; safeguard our citizens; defend our allies; and improve the effectiveness, affordability, and the speed of our operations. The table stakes are high. What is done now to accelerate and deliver AI to the warfighter will have a profound impact on our nation’s ability to field a pre-eminent and capable military force.
The two-day DoD AI Symposium and Exposition will bring together DoD, industry, academia, and across government AI experts and professionals to discuss the Department’s current activities, future direction, challenges, and areas of collaboration with industry and academia that surround the operationalization of AI. There will be separate track sessions to discuss items of relevance to DoD employees, academia, and industry.
In addition to the Symposium, there will be an exposition area for industry, academia, and DoD programs to demonstrate AI solutions and services that meet the military services' requirements.
The wellbeing of the AI community is our top priority. Per CDC best practices surrounding the growing impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the JAIC has decided to postpone the DoD Artificial Intelligence Symposium. The Symposium will take place on September 9-10, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, VA.
In the meantime, the JAIC will continue move forward the AI conversation through a variety of means to include online keynotes, interesting articles and blogs, and other interactive online opportunities.
As we work through all the details over the coming weeks, we will continue to share updates here. For those who already registered for the April Symposium, we hope that you will be able to join the DoD AI community in September. We shall be sending out information as quickly as possible.
For new attendees, updates will be posted to this site so you can prepare. For those organizations who registered to be a part of the exposition, we shall be providing you information via email shortly.
Stay tuned for more information on the 2020 AI Symposium and also for interesting content on AI.mil. Thank you for understanding, and take every precaution to stay healthy.
